
Murchison Falls National Park
Characterised by the waters of the River Nile plunging from the heights of the Rift Valley, Murchison Falls is Uganda’s oldest and largest national park. Within its boundaries visitors can find 76 different species of mammal and 451 different species of bird. The river dissects the 3,840 km² park which comprises savannahs, riverine woodland and patches of forest. Four of the Big Five can be found on a tailor-made safari in Murchison Falls National Park – there are no rhino.

Elephants, buffalo and giraffe are the more common sightings of iconic species within Murchison Falls National Park, with approximately 1,330 elephants, over 8,200 buffalo and more than 1,500 giraffes.
Around 130 lions are found in the park and they are the main predator of the region although leopard is also present. Antelope species include waterbuck, bushbuck, Ugandan kob, Jackson’s hartebeest and oribis. Crocodile and hippos are both found in healthy numbers in the waterways.
The Budongo, Kaniyo Pabidi and Rabongo forests are home to roughly 600 chimpanzees, and a visit to Murchison Falls can be easily combined with chimp trekking. Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls National Park
Wildlife viewing is good year-round at Murchison Falls and the park can be visited during any month. The dry season from December to February is the optimum time to see wildlife but is usually very hot. During the wetter months from June to November the park is at its most beautiful.
